As we continue to celebrate 241 years of Marine Corps heritage through elaborate Balls and celebrations, let us pause to remember those who went before us, their legacy and the traditions formed through a brotherhood of unique individuals who never faltered. Always persevered with no intent other than to protect the United State of America and the way of life we all enjoy.
We are rapidly approaching Christmas, the New Year and many obligations we all face in the approaching season. Before this time of the year becomes too hectic, I wish to address the upcoming DoNC Quarterly meeting in Salisbury at the VA Facility this January 7th, 2017. In addition to the normal venue of business to be vetted, we will accept announcements of intent to run for an elected position within the DoNC. You, as a Detachment Commandant, comprise the DoNC Board of Trustees along with the DoNC Staff Officers. I implore you to look within your membership and at yourself as a potential elected officer. Talk to those you know who are dedicated, professional and capable of carrying the DoNC into the future as an officer of the Department others envy. Encourage them to announce their intent to run for an elected position this January at the Winter Quarterly. Only through competition can we all stay on our “A” game and continue to prosper. Complacency leads to a downward spiral and an attitude of negativity. We must encourage involvement at every level of the DoNC to sustain the Marine Corps League as an entity to be respected and acknowledged. I would like to see, at a minimum, two announcements of intent to run for each of the four elected positions serving in 2017, within the DoNC.
Please continue to support your Detachment, the Department and National Staff as we make 2017 the best year yet.

Here is 1st Lt. Ahearn's narrative on Tugboat's and his journey back to Viet-Nam in their attempt to recover the remains of their friend and fellow Marine Tom Mahoney. Even though they were unsuccessful in their attempt, I know that you will find this very interesting. SEMPER FI, Robert W. Overbay, Commandant, Walter F. Osborne, Jr, Det. 1298
